The avant-garde of craftsmanship in a dozen objects

The avant-garde of craftsmanship in a dozen objects

Craftsmanship is associated with tradition and handmade objects, with something ancient that has survived, but this definition falls short to explain contemporary crafts. Now, craftsmanship does not only produce functional objects for everyday use or decoration, but also avant-garde objects that, influenced by design, respond to new problems in society. It is this avant-garde craftsmanship that we wanted to make visible with the Esencia project: to translate our designs through the expert hands of craftsmen in order to create a new functional and aesthetic object universe.

Ana Yago created a dozen neo-objects around traditional techniques and materials that generated from tablets and smart phones covers, to sensory packaging for wine bottles, portable bindings or supports for musical scores, among others. Sheeven went into the preparation of an artisan dessert that recreated the study of colour through flavour.

The success of the exhibition took it to the headquarters of Fundesarte in Madrid and to its presence in the National Craftsmanship Awards. It was only the first step in promoting the collaboration between design and crafts that would be consolidated in other editions, thanks to the support of the Japan Foundation.
